Movie Review : Kuch Bheege Alfaaz

Kuch Bheege Alfaaz
Director: Onir
Cast: Geetanjali Thapa, Zain Khan Durrani, Shray Rai Tiwari
Rating: 2/5

A popular RJ who prefers to keep his identity hidden. A woman who wants to ‘create beautiful things’ and goes on Tinder dates with men who don’t have a profile picture. She is full of life, loves teasing friends with naughty jokes; he is himself only in the company of a stray dog. Their unlikely love story is Onir’s Kuch Bheege Alfaaz.

The premise of the film is quite poetic, much like romantic poetry - laden with emotions, pathos and melancholy. The words themselves are beautiful but, at the end of the day, they are just empty words. What the film, and its inherent poetry, lack is soul.

Onir’s latest film is the story of a lively woman falling in love with an RJ who prefers to remain hidden behind the radio set. A wrong number connects the two and they find comfort in each others’ words. While one loves Urdu and peppers his conversations with shayari, the other belongs to the social media generation.

Despite emotionally charged sequences, the entire narrative feels a tad slow, even at the length of 120 minutes! Unless you believe in the teen love where words were more important than deeds and poetry could solve all problems in the world, the film is most likely to leave you untouched.

Based entirely in Kolkata, Onir’s Kuch Bheege Alfaaz brings the essence of the city to the silver screen. The city’s laid-back life, its coffee shops, trams, fish markets and addabaazi - Onir captures it all through his lens.

Geetanjali Thapa, who plays Archana in the film, is perhaps one element that will keep you from getting entirely bored. Her character has leucoderma and has been dealing with people’s stares and jokes since her childhood. However, undeterred, she continues to live a life that defies all norms and cliches in the society. Despite heartbreaks and setbacks in professional life, she does not give up.
